Sacred Shores, Debris-Free GoM
Sacred Shores, Debris-Free Gulf of Mannar is a community-led initiative by People’s Action for Development (PAD) to reduce plastic pollution across key coastal pilgrimage sites in Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi along the Gulf of Mannar.
These sacred destinations attract millions of pilgrims each year, but increasing plastic waste threatens marine ecosystems, coastal biodiversity, and local livelihoods. This project combines environmental action with cultural values to promote responsible behaviour among pilgrims, vendors, and local communities.
The initiative engages over 50,000 people through awareness campaigns, pledge activities, and eco-signage. More than 300 youth are trained as Eco-Champions to lead clean-up drives, Ocean Clubs, and community campaigns. Local vendors, taxi drivers, and self-help groups are supported to promote eco-friendly alternatives such as cloth bags and refill practices.
By strengthening community ownership and collaborating with local institutions, the project aims to significantly reduce plastic waste and build long-term environmental stewardship.
Aligned with global sustainability goals, Sacred Shores offers a scalable model for plastic-free pilgrimage pathways and resilient coastal communities.
